Paul is a great strummer. His fingerstyle playing is a thumb and index approach,
similar to the Delta Blues players. But of course the songs are sweet.
“Yesterday” has a straight ahead style that can be applied to many
ballads. “Mother Nature’s Son” is a veritable study in using key of D.
“Blackbird” is somewhat classical. “We Can Work it Out” is a strong
pop strummer. I could go on with choices but it’s a chance for you to
chose a favourite too. And if you’re a writer you might want to
study a non guitar song like “Penny Lane”. How many times does
he change key? Have you written in such a long melodic form?
McCartney’s repertoire speaks for itself.
